Cross of Christ returns to City Centre after year of cancellations

Good Friday, 2 April 2021
1 pm, Martin Place Amphitheatre, Sydney

Tomorrow, Christians will remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Good Friday services around the country. In Sydney, Wesley Mission will use Martin Place as the stage for Jesus’ final, agonising steps to the Cross told through drama, songs and words.

With a crown of thorns, Jesus will carry his Cross through the seated crowd to the place of crucifixion. Witnessing this heart-wrenching journey are hundreds of people who will then lay red carnations onto the Cross in response.

A group of musicians and a combined choir of Samoan and Tongan voices will echo through the civic heart of Sydney.

Highlighting the importance of the day, Wesley Mission CEO Rev Stu Cameron said, “On Good Friday, it is not uncommon to hear people ask, ‘what’s so good about it?’. But the Cross reveals Jesus’ sacrificial love, and we meet a Saviour who is not removed from the challenging realities of life, but who knows our struggles.”

“After one of the most challenging years in living memory for most Australians, Good Friday speaks of hope on the darkest of days, when it seems that all is lost.”

Media should assemble at Martin Place Amphitheatre at 12.50 pm.
Tim Watkins will play Jesus.
