Want to be an aunt or uncle?
Becoming an aunt or uncle is an important commitment and Wesley Mission takes the greatest care in reviewing all applicants. As a child-focused organisation, the needs and safety of children underpin the entire mentoring program. Mentors need to be willing to undergo full child protection screening checks.
Volunteering as an aunt or uncle is rich and rewarding work. It requires mentors to open their heart and home to a child in need for one day or weekend a month in a spirit of acceptance, friendship and understanding for both the child and their parent/s.
These children are living with challenging family circumstances which may include a parent or sibling struggling with chronic illness or addiction, emotional trauma, social and financial disadvantage, isolation and limited extended family support.
It is essential that volunteer mentors are willing to make this commitment for a minimum of 12 months. Many of the children referred to the program have had lots of disappointment and rejection in their life and need to know they are accepted.
