COVID-19: Statement from Wesley Mission – 26 August 2021

Wesley Mission continues to partner with tenants at 17-19 James Street, Windale, as they remain in isolation following Hunter New England Health’s announcement on Tuesday of the COVID-19 case at this location.

The public health unit advises that all tests taken yesterday were negative. Tenants remain in isolation in their units, and another round of testing will be arranged later in the week. A risk assessment will be carried out following this second round of tests to determine whether or not tenants need to continue with the health directives currently applied to this site. Dr David Durrheim from Hunter New England Health has thanked residents for their cooperation.

Wesley Mission’s Community Housing Team have spoken with all tenants to understand their individual needs in isolation and have made arrangements for important items such as medication to be supplied. On Wednesday afternoon, all tenants received a week’s worth of essential supplies, including fresh food, pantry staples and personal care items.

Wesley Mission CEO, Rev Stu Cameron says, “Our focus remains meeting our tenants’ needs in isolation. We’re here to listen and to help resolve any concerns they may have. Our chaplains are also making daily calls and have plenty of time to talk.”

“We’ve also had several local community groups offer their support, and the Disaster Welfare team from the Department of Communities and Justice has been superb. Church groups have offered to cook meals – that says a lot about how this region cares.”

“We would also like to thank Dr Tony Merritt and his team at NSW Health for their leadership and regular connection with our Wesley Community Housing team as needs arise.”

The tenant who was announced as a confirmed case on Tuesday has been in contact with the Wesley Community Housing team and remains in isolation off-site.
