“It was probably my destiny that I’d ended up working for Wesley Mission,” says Roger.
The word ‘destiny’ is befitting of Roger’s journey with Wesley Mission. Having grown up in a Methodist church, Roger’s faith is closely aligned with Wesley Mission. Roger worked for Wesley Mission from 2007 until his retirement.
After spending years working in different careers, including administration, running his own business and financial planning, Roger desired to do something more. So, when an opportunity arose at Wesley Mission, he jumped at it.
“I had no real reason to leave my other job,” explains Roger. “I just thought it'd be nice to look at ways that I could possibly give back, rather than working for profit.”
And while Roger will leave a long-lasting mark through the inspiring work he’s done in his role at Wesley Mission, Roger’s also leaving a legacy – having chosen to leave a gift in his Will to Wesley Mission.
A gift for the generations
Personally inspired by the many people who’ve left gifts in their Wills, Roger and his wife felt prompted to follow in their footsteps.
“My wife and I just wanted to be part of that tradition. And we have the opportunity to do so. So, we sought to make some changes to our estate plan to include Wesley Mission in our Will,” Roger shares.
Roger says his faith also motivated him to give. “In the Bible, there’s a verse where Jesus said, ‘It's better to give than to receive’. We’ve always taken that attitude that if we were able to help others, whether it was just something on the spot or something more in the future, then we’d do it.”
Irrespective of the size of the gift, Roger says it’s the dedication of the giver that counts.
“It's the commitment of the giver, which Wesley Mission truly appreciates. And I think we just wanted to make a commitment, that was way bigger than maybe what we could have done so at the time, through a gift in our Will.”
For Roger knowing that they’re leaving a lasting legacy, which can impact the lives of people in need, is what makes this gift so special.
“It's always a great feeling when you can make a gift,” he says. “While we know that we won't ever meet the people who benefit from the gift, that's not the important thing. It’s the fact you can help people and just change their lives.”
