The gambling industry spent $287.2 million on advertising in Australia last year, excluding in-stadium advertising or sponsorships, an increase of $15.9 million from 2020.
Gambling advertising saturates our favourite games with messages promoting sports betting so that 3 in 4 kids now think gambling is a normal part of sport.
Australians lost $1.2 billion on sports betting last year, but the losses aren’t just financial. Gambling harms our relationships, our health, our jobs and our communities.
But even when we might want to stop, intrusive messages and offers arrive on our smartphones. And the message we hear is ‘Gamble Responsibly’, which adds guilt and shame, making it harder to reach out for help.
Australians love sport, and we love our families. But we’ve had a gutful of gambling.
