Help an older person stay connected

Many older people feel isolated and lonely, whether they’re in an aged care facility or still living at home. This can affect health, happiness and general quality of life. Wesley Aged Care Volunteer Visitors is a scheme that connects volunteers with older people for friendship, companionship and regular visits to their home or facility.

By becoming a Wesley Aged Care volunteer visitor, you can give an older person something to look forward to, help them stay socially connected and enhance their wellbeing. With just an hour or two a fortnight – or more if you want – you can do something meaningful that will make a real difference to someone’s life.

Being a Wesley Aged Care volunteer visitor for an older person is a very special opportunity to connect with someone from a different generation and enhance each others’ lives.

Who can volunteer?

The ACVVS may be right for you if you are 18 or over, with an empathetic, warm nature and can commit to at least 12 months of regular fortnightly visits. We currently operate across the northern, inner west, south west and western regions of Sydney as well as the Central Coast, the Hunter, Lake Macquarie and Taree.

Our volunteers come from a range of different ages, genders and backgrounds. When you join the scheme, we will match you with an older person with similar interests.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I qualify as a volunteer visitor?
No formal qualifications are needed, just a patient, caring disposition. We’ll provide two hours of online training with opportunities for further training throughout the year and your first visit will be facilitated by one of our Wesley Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Coordinators.
Do I need to be vaccinated?
It depends on any current public health orders and the preferences of the older person you’re visiting. We recommend any volunteers entering aged care facilities be vaccinated for flu and COVID-19.
How often do I need to visit?
Visits are usually weekly or fortnightly for around an hour each – although we encourage volunteers to visit weekly to allow more flexibility in case of illness or travel. You can work out the best times and days to visit with your older person – it doesn’t have to be the same day each week.
What do I do when I visit?
You’re there to have a chat and provide some companionship. You can take your person out of their home or facility with permission – to a local park or café for example. You can also drive the older person somewhere with permission from your Wesley Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Coordinator and by providing us with a copy of your driver’s licence and comprehensive car insurance policy.
Should I help them with household chores?
Contributing to household tasks in a small way may help you connect, but please don’t perform chores or run errands for your older person as this may mask an unmet need. If you’re concerned that your older person is struggling with household chores and needs more help, please discuss it with your Wesley Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Coordinator.
