Zach’s is a heartwarming tale of resilience, proving the power of perseverance and the importance of community.
From a young age, Zach was without a stable home or nurturing family. He began his life in out-of-home care before moving to a refuge when he was older – a safe haven during a challenging period in his life.
It was while he was living in the refuge that Zach met Sharna, and everything started to turn around. A compassionate and understanding partner, Sharna shared Zach’s dream for a brighter future.
Together, Zach and Sharna embarked on a challenging journey to stability and security. They moved from one temporary accommodation to another, including living on Zach’s mother’s lounge and later on a mattress on the floor at Sharna’s mother’s house. Despite these difficult circumstances, their determination to create a stable environment for themselves and their future family never wavered.
Simple blessings
Zach and Sharna’s turning point came when they were offered Supported Independent Living (SIL) accommodation with Wesley Mission. This housing model helps people to transition to independent living, not only putting a roof over their heads, but also providing the ongoing support they need to thrive.
With the newfound stability and support from the SIL program, Zach and Sharna’s lives began to transform. Together, they worked tirelessly to build a foundation for their future, focusing on education, skill development and securing stable employment.
As they continued their journey, they encountered another blessing – an addition to their family. Their daughter, Willow, became the shining light in their lives, inspiring them to strive even harder to create a nurturing and loving environment for her.
Soon after Willow’s birth, through their unwavering determination and the support of their community, Zach and Sharna finally moved into a private rental property, marking their transition to full independence. This incredible achievement gave them a safe and stable home, but also provided a sense of pride and accomplishment. They had overcome immense obstacles and created a brighter future for themselves and their daughter.
The transformative power of love
“It’s been a pleasure to watch this little family grow,” says John, Zach and Sharna’s case manager.
“From move in day as a couple of unsure teens, to now mum and dad of the very cheeky Willow, there’s been plenty of ups and downs, but I couldn’t be more proud to have worked with these guys.”
After difficult starts to life, Zach and Sharna have transformed to achieve stability, independence and joy – and they’re filled with gratitude for the helping hands that got them here.
“We are just grateful for the support we have received from Wesley Mission and the SIL program,” say Zach and Sharna. “We look forward to our future, now everything looks a little brighter.”
